When my daughters started swimming lessons last month, I was over the moon. I never learned to swim myself and have always had some fear of water, so I wanted them to feel confident and safe in pools, beaches, and water parks.
But let me tell you—our first swimming class was chaotic. By the time we got home, I was still in wet clothes, carrying dripping bags, with two cranky, hungry kids in the backseat. It was a real mom moment!
Thankfully, after a couple of sessions, I picked up some game-changing tricks that made things run so much smoother. If your child is starting swim lessons soon, here’s a list of must-have items for kids’ swimming lessons that will save you stress and keep things fun.
1. Towels
Pack at least two towels-one for drying after swimming and another for drying after the shower. invest in quick-dry microfiber towels. They’re lightweight, absorbent, and take up less space in your swim bag.
2. Easy slip-on shoes
Crocs, flip-flops, or water sandals are all good choices for swimming lessons. they are easy to put on and off and are much safer and faster. avoid shoes with laces, shoes that aren’t water proof or slippery footwear.
3. Water proof bag for wet clothes
A reusable wet bag is a lifesaver. Instead of soggy swimsuits leaking all over your car, you can keep everything contained. Skip the disposable grocery bags—these rip easily and aren’t eco-friendly.
4. Extra clothes and diapers
Always pack a fresh change of clothes for your child. After class, their pre-swim outfit is usually damp or uncomfortable, so having something dry and cozy makes the ride home much happier. keep a whole set of undergarments, tops and trousers, and a light (or heavy depending on the weather) jacket for the ride or walk back home. Also, keep extra diapers handy for kids who aren’t potty trained yet to avoid any unfortunate events.
5. Soap, shampoo and lotion
pack small bottles of shampoo and soap for the post-swim shower. Pool water is generally chlorinated to make it safe for swimming however, chlorine strips away natural oils disrupting its natural barriers. therefore I like to keep head-to-toe baby body wash as it is milder. it also saves space in our swim bag. I also keep a bottle of rich lotion to slather on after the shower in an attempt to lock in moisture.
6. Swim diaper (for little ones)
If your child isn’t potty-trained yet, swim diapers are a must. Make sure they fit snugly to avoid “accidents” in the pool. Many facilities even require them.
7. Change of clothes for yourself
If you’re joining a parent-and-child swim class, don’t forget about yourself. Pack a fresh outfit so you’re not driving home in soggy clothes.
8. Snacks and a water bottle
Swimming burns a lot of energy and kids come out of the pool starving. keeping healthy and nutritious snacks like cheese sticks, fruit, granola bars and crackers can save tantrums and meltdowns.
9. Ear plugs (optional but helpful)
Some kids are sensitive to water in their ears, and repeated exposure can sometimes lead to discomfort or even ear infections. Soft silicone ear plugs designed for swimming can help keep water out and make lessons more comfortable. If your child struggles with earaches or is hesitant about submerging their head, these can be a game-changer.
10. Goggles
If your child is comfortable wearing them, a good pair of swim goggles can make a big difference. They protect little eyes from chlorine, help kids feel more confident putting their face in the water, and reduce fussing during lessons. Just make sure they’re the right size and fit snugly without being too tight.
11. Keep everything in a swim bag
Keep a dedicated “swim bag” stocked with these essentials so you’re never scrambling at the last minute. Having everything ready makes the routine much smoother—and keeps the focus on your little swimmer’s progress (not the packing chaos).
Final thoughts
Swimming lessons are such a wonderful skill and confidence booster for kids, but the first few classes can feel overwhelming. With the right gear, you’ll avoid the stress and focus more on cheering your little swimmer on.
So, next time you pack your swim bag, keep this checklist in mind. It’ll make your child’s swimming lessons easier, smoother, and way more enjoyable—for both of you!
